To prerecord is to put sound or pictures onto a machine now, so you can play them later. Radio, TV, and music use it all the time: a host may prerecord an interview on Tuesday and air it on Friday. The point is timing — it is not live. You hear prerecorded laughter, a prerecorded message on the phone, a singer who prerecorded the vocal and then “sings” on stage to that track. In ordinary talk, record already covers a lot of this; prerecord is the extra flag that says “ahead of time, not in the moment.” Though actually live shows still use prerecorded bits (ads, clips, backing tracks), so “live” and “prerecorded” can sit in the same hour. Formal enough for production notes; everyday enough for “they prerecorded the whole show.”
