When something is preponderantly this or that, that thing is the main one, the most important one, or the one you meet most often. Writers of reports and studies like it: a country can be preponderantly urban, a group preponderantly young, the evidence preponderantly on one side. The quiet picture behind it is a pair of scales — one side is heavier. Though actually, almost nobody says this in ordinary talk. Friends just say mostly or mainly, and they are not being careless; they are being natural. Preponderantly is a calm, counting word, not an emotional one. You will see it in formal writing far more than you will ever need to say it.
