This describing word is for warnings, mostly in hospitals and careful writing. Premonitory signs are the small, unwelcome things that show up before something worse — a head pain before a bad attack, a change in mood before a fall. You would not call a kind reminder premonitory. If a thing is premonitory, it is pointing at trouble ahead. At home people just say warning or early; doctors and serious writers reach for this one. It is almost never used about a person ('a premonitory man' sounds wrong); the warning lives in the sign, not in someone's character.
