A premiership is the stretch of time when someone is Prime Minister — the years in that job, not the person and not the title alone. It is a British and Commonwealth word. You say during her premiership, or he resigned after five years in the premiership. American English more often talks about a presidency, or simply “while she was prime minister.” The ending -ship turns a role into a noun for holding that role, as in leadership. Though actually, in Britain you will also meet the Premiership as a sports name: for years it was the top English football league (now usually called the Premier League), and rugby still uses it. That is the same spelling on a poster, but this entry is the political time-in-office meaning.
