    A premiere is the first time a film, play, or piece of music is shown to the public. People dress up; cameras come; the people who made it often walk in. You can also use it as a verb: a film premieres in Cannes, or an opera premieres in . News and arts talk use it a lot; it is a little dressy for the dinner table, but movie fans say it without trouble. Though actually, “first” is slipperier than it looks. A world premiere is the very first showing anywhere. A Taiwan premiere may still be “the first here,” even if another country saw it last month. Keep the extra e at the end: premiere is this opening night. Premier, without that e, is a different word — often the Prime Minister, or “the most important.”
