A preliterate society is one that has not yet made a written language. People there still speak, tell stories, and remember, but they do not write those things down. Historians and anthropologists use this word; it is not everyday chat. Though actually, it describes a whole culture before writing exists, not a single person who cannot read. A person who cannot read is . Calling a living group “preliterate” can also sound as if they are stuck in the past, so careful writers now often say a society without writing, or talk about oral culture instead.
