A prefect is a student at school (common in British-style schools) who is given special responsibility to help keep order - like helping younger students, checking uniforms, or supervising during breaks. It's usually an honor given to older, trusted students. The word is also used for certain government officials, especially in ancient Rome or modern France, who manage a region on behalf of a higher authority.
