A preemie is a baby born too early — before the usual nine months. This is informal, friendly English, especially American. On a ward, doctors may say premature baby or preterm infant; families and nurses often say preemie. The -ie ending makes it sound small and cared-for, like a nickname, not a cold hospital word. Some people spell it premie. It names the child, not the birth: the baby is a preemie. It is kind in tone, not rude, but it is still casual, so a formal paper would use the longer words.
