Predicative is a grammar word. It tells you where a describing word sits in the sentence. A predicative adjective or phrase comes after a verb, most often after be, and also after seem, look, feel, become. In ‘She is happy,’ happy is predicative: it comes after is, and it tells you about she. The other common seat for an adjective is before a noun, as in ‘a happy child.’ Same word, different place. Some almost only work the predicative way: we say ‘The baby is asleep’ and ‘He is afraid,’ but not ‘an asleep baby,’ and we rarely say ‘an afraid man’ in ordinary talk. You will meet predicative in grammar notes, not in the . It has nothing to do with guessing the future — that other word is predictive.
