Precautionary describes an action that is done to stop something dangerous or unpleasant before it happens. Precautionary measures are the extra steps: checks, masks, a cancelled trip, a closed road. The word is at home in news, hospitals, weather warnings, and official statements. It often sounds calm and a little distant — “this is only precautionary” means “we do not know that harm is coming, but we will not wait to find out.” Though actually, that sentence can hide a real worry; speakers use the soft word so people do not panic. In environmental talk you will also meet the precautionary principle: if an action might cause serious harm, and the science is still not clear, you hold back rather than push on. That is a specialist use, but it is the same idea grown large. The word is almost always an adjective; the everyday noun you want is still precaution.
