A preacher is a person who talks about God or a religious teaching in front of other people, often in a church. They stand up and preach: they explain a holy book, call people to live a certain way, and try to move hearts. In many Protestant churches the Sunday speaker is a preacher. A pastor or minister often does this job, though actually not every preacher is the full-time leader of a church, and not every church uses this word. You can hear it with respect, or sometimes with a little distance, as if the person is always telling others what to do. There are street preachers too, speaking outdoors. The word names the speaking job, not one exact rank.
組成preach + -er (a person who does that). It also continues Middle English from Old French preecheor, from Latin praedicator, someone who proclaims in public. It took the place of Old English bydel.
