Pre-eminence is the noun: the state of standing clearly above the others — more important, more powerful, or simply better at that thing than anyone else in the group. We use it for a country, a company, a team, a school of thought, or a person in a field (“her pre-eminence as a pianist”). It is formal, a little old-fashioned; in ordinary talk people more often say the lead, the top spot, or being the best. British writing often keeps the hyphen (pre-eminence); American writing often drops it (preeminence). Though actually, eminence on its own already means high standing — and in the Catholic Church “His Eminence” is a title for a cardinal, which is a different use and can sit beside this word in a confusing way.
