The Prado is Spain's great national museum of painting and sculpture, in Madrid. People say "the Prado" the way they say "the Louvre" in Paris — the name of the place is enough. It holds many of the most famous Spanish pictures, and also work by painters from other countries. You will hear El Greco, Goya, and Velázquez a lot in the same breath as the Prado; Rubens is there too, though he was not Spanish. Though actually, prado in Spanish just means a meadow; the museum took its name from the meadow and the grand walk nearby, not from a founder called Prado. In English it is a proper name, always capital P. Art students, tourists, and news about big paintings use it. It is not a word for any museum — only this one, unless the sentence clearly points to something else (Prado is also a surname).
