A pouffe is a soft, low piece of furniture, like a fat cushion with a bit of shape. You sit on it, or more often you rest your feet on it while you sit in a chair. It has no back and no arms. This spelling is the usual British one for the furniture; you will also see pouf. Americans more often say ottoman or footstool. It lives in living rooms: you pull it over when a guest needs a seat, or you put your legs up after work. Some open so you can keep blankets inside — though actually people are not careful with the name when that happens, and they may still call it a pouffe. The word feels homey, a little old-fashioned-cosy, not shop-technical, though furniture shops still use it.
