The Potteries is a district in , in the English Midlands, famous for making china and pottery. People say the Potteries as a place name, with a capital P, the way they say the Midlands. It centres on and the old pottery towns around it — the kind of place where factory chimneys and famous names belong to local history, not just to a shop. You meet it in British geography, industrial history, and football chat more than in American English. Though actually it is not “any area with potteries” and not the ordinary plural of pottery (plates, vases). Those potteries are factories; the Potteries is the region.
