Potable means safe to drink. Potable water is water you can put in a glass without getting ill — cleaned and checked, not sea water, not water from a dirty stream. It is a careful, official word. Signs, science books, and aid reports use it. In everyday English people say drinking water or “you can drink this.” You may also meet potable as a noun in old or playful writing, meaning a drink, but the usual job of the word is the adjective: drinkable, safe. Though actually, students often mix it with portable, which means you can carry it. One letter is different, and the meanings are not friends. Potable comes from a Latin verb meaning to drink, the same family as potion. Portable comes from a verb meaning to carry.
