Postpartum means about the time right after a woman has a baby — her body, her feelings, and the care she needs in those days and weeks. Doctors talk about postpartum bleeding, postpartum recovery, and postpartum depression. It sits very close to , and people mix them. Though actually postpartum keeps its eyes on the mother after giving birth; can stretch to the baby as well, and to a slightly longer stretch of ‘after birth’ care. American health English loves postpartum; British health English often says for the same days. It is a medical word. In gentle everyday talk, ‘after the baby’ is usually enough. It is not a word for the baby’s own age, and it is not the pregnancy itself.
