A place where you can buy stamps and send letters and parcels. It can be a whole building, or just a counter inside a shop.

Picture a counter where a letter leaves your hand. On your side there is one person with one parcel; on the other side there is a scale, a stamp, and a system that will carry the parcel to a door you cannot see. The word points at that handover. Sometimes it means the room where it happens, and sometimes the whole system waiting behind the counter — and English lets the same two words do both jobs.
