In the old Greek stories, Poseidon is the god of the sea. He is one of three brothers who divided the world: Zeus took the sky, Hades the underworld, and Poseidon the water. Writers also give him power over earthquakes and horses. Artists show him with a three-pronged spear, a trident, which he uses to stir the . The Romans told almost the same story but called him Neptune — not a second sea-god in another sea, but the Roman name for that same figure. The name comes from Ancient Greek Poseidôn. In English we say puh-SY-dun. You will meet him in myths, poems, and sometimes as a name for ships or sports teams that want a “sea-god” feeling. Ordinary people do not pray to him in daily life; he lives in stories.
