Portland is the largest city in the US state of Oregon, in the northwest of the country. It sits where the Willamette River meets the Columbia River, and it grew as a river port. People know it for rain, bicycles, coffee, and a slightly odd, independent feel — locals like the line “Keep Portland Weird.” Though actually there are other Portlands too, including a well-known one in Maine and one in England, so careful speakers say Portland, Oregon. The name is simply port plus land: land by a harbour. It is a place name, not a word you use for other things.
