Poppycock means nonsense: talk you think is silly, false, or not worth believing. It is informal, a little old-fashioned and a little funny, the sort of thing a grandparent might say instead of a rude word. You dismiss an idea with it: “That’s poppycock.” It is stronger than “I disagree” and lighter than a real insult. You will meet it more in writing and in playful speech than in young people’s daily talk. Though actually, despite looking as if it had something to do with the flower poppy, it does not. English borrowed it from Dutch, where the two halves meant soft food and dung. That messy origin is the true one; a story that ties it to the flower is a folk tale.
