Popocatépetl is a volcano in Mexico — a mountain that can still send out smoke and ash. It is one of Mexico's highest mountains, not far from Mexico City. English speakers in the US and UK often mention it because the name is hard to say: roughly po-po-ka-TEH-pet-l, with the strong beat on té. Though actually the name is not a joke; it is from , the old language of the Aztec people. Popōca means to smoke and tepētl means mountain, so the whole name means smoking mountain, which is exactly what it is. Mexicans often it to Popo.
