Poplin is a strong cotton cloth with a slight shine and a fine rib — tiny raised lines you can feel with a finger. People use it for shirts, dresses, and neat school-type clothes. It hangs smoothly and looks a little formal without being stiff like denim. Though actually the English word was reshaped as if it had something to do with the Pope, but that is a folk story. It comes from Poperinge, a town in Flanders that was famous for cloth; French papeline was twisted in English until it looked like Pope plus a cloth ending.
