- 1
A poplar is a very tall, thin tree that grows very fast, with a straight trunk. People plant them in rows along roads and at the edge of fields. The leaves often shake in a light wind. Some kinds are grown for wood and paper. It is not a fruit tree, and it is not a pine. Though actually the Latin name pōpulus looks like the Latin word for people, they are different words — so poplar the tree and popular (liked by many people) are not a family, even though they sit near each other in the dictionary.
白楊、楊樹
組成From Middle English popler, from Anglo-Norman popler and Old French poplier (compare French peuplier), from Latin pōpulus, with a suffix added later.
