Pompey was a Roman army leader and a man in government. He lived from 106 to 48 BC. People often call him Pompey the Great. For a time he shared power with Julius Caesar. Then they became enemies. Caesar beat him in a war in 48 BC. Pompey ran to Egypt, and he was killed there. Though actually, in England people also say Pompey as a nickname for the city Portsmouth and for its football club — that is a place, not the Roman man. The two uses share a spelling, and mix both of them up with Pompeii, the city a volcano buried. That is a different name.
