Pomade is a sweet-smelling stuff men rub through their hair to make it lie smooth and shiny. Think of old photographs: hair combed back, not a piece out of place. Dictionaries often say “especially in the past,” and that is fair for grandfathers — though actually a lot of barbers and some younger men still use it for a slick style. It is thicker and greasier than hair gel, which is mostly water; pomade is closer to oil or wax, and it can feel heavy and stay in the hair. The word came from French, and before that Italian, from a word for apple, because early mixes were fat scented with apple. You can also pomade your hair as a verb, but the noun is the one people know. It feels a little old-fashioned, a little fancy.
