Polyester is a human-made fibre used to make cloth. School sports shirts, cheap dresses, “no-iron” office wear, and a lot of mixed cotton-and-something fabric are polyester or part polyester. It is light, it dries fast, and it does not crease as readily as cotton — factories like it for that. People use the word for the fibre and for the finished cloth. Though actually, some speakers say polyester with a little , as if it were “not real cloth,” because it can feel sweaty and it does not come from a plant or a sheep. Chemists also use the name for a whole family of plastics; the clothes sense is the one most meet first. It is ordinary shop English, not fancy.
組成poly- “many” + ester, a chemistry piece. The material is a long chain of many ester units joined together.
