1. 1

Polonius is an old man in Shakespeare’s play Hamlet: a court adviser, and the father of Ophelia and Laertes. He loves giving long, tidy advice — “to thine own self be true” is his line — and he likes to listen in on other people. In the play he hides behind a thick curtain (an arras) in the queen’s room; Hamlet thinks the person behind it is the king, pushes a sword through the cloth, and kills Polonius by mistake. That death is an accident, and it still sets much of the rest of the tragedy moving. English classes talk about him as a busy, wordy old man who means well and sees too little. The name in school almost always means this character, not a real person you might meet.
