    Informal American English for a prison, almost always in the phrase the pokey: "He spent a night in the pokey." It is slang, a bit old-fashioned and . You hear it in films, crime stories, and loose talk, not in court and not in the news when the news is trying to be careful. People say it to sound casual, even when the fact is not funny. Though actually, pokey — and the spelling poky — can also mean slow, or small and cramped. That is a different use. This entry is only the jail.
