1. 1

Pictures or patterns burned onto wood or leather with a hot metal tool, or the craft of making them. The old tool was a real fire poker, heated in the fire and then pressed or drawn across the surface so the burn-line becomes the drawing. Today people often use a special electric pen, but the name has stayed. You may also hear pyrography, which is the more technical name; pokerwork is the older, plainer English word, more at home in crafts, folk art, and antiques than in an art-school . It is not an everyday word. You meet it on a labelled box, in a craft class, or in a museum caption. The poker here is the hot iron, not the card game.
