This is how you do something when the doing itself has no use. You add it to a verb: you argue pointlessly, wait pointlessly, check your phone pointlessly. It does not add a new meaning beside pointless; it only lets the same idea sit on the action rather than on the thing. Same point as purpose, not a sharp tip. Everyday English. You hear it when someone is a little tired or — it often carries a small sigh.
