In building, pointing is the wet mix pushed into the thin gaps between bricks or stones, and also the way that mix is put in and finished. After the wall is up, a builder fills those gaps, then smooths or shapes the surface so rain cannot get in. You can look at an old house and read the pointing: it may sit flat with the bricks, or stand out a little like a small ridge, or be cut in a neat line. After many years it can , and then people pay someone to cut out the old mix and put in new — that later job is often called repointing. This is a trade word. You meet it in house , on building sites, and in DIY shops, not in ordinary classroom talk. Though actually, in everyday English the same spelling is far more often the act of using a finger to show something. That is a different use. This entry is only the wall.
