If you do something pointedly, you do it on purpose so that another person will feel your , , or — without you having to spell the feeling out in a long speech. You look pointedly at your watch. You pointedly change the subject. You pointedly do not laugh at the joke. The act is a message: I noticed, and I am not pleased. It is a little sharp, a little cold, and it belongs to social English, spoken and written. Though actually, it is not the same as clearly or obviously. A thing can be obvious by accident; pointedly means someone aimed the sign at you. And it is not about a pointed shape, like a pointed roof. Here pointed is about a remark or a gesture that has a sharp meaning, meant to be felt.
