1. 1

In grammar, the pluperfect is the form that means “had done” — She had left before I called. English already had a “perfect” (have done). The pluperfect sits one step further back in time: the thing was already finished before another past moment. English teachers in Taiwan almost always call this the past perfect, not the pluperfect. Pluperfect is the older, Latin-classroom name. You will still see it in some grammar books, especially older ones, and in talk about other languages that keep this name for a tense. Though actually, a few people play with pluperfect to mean “extremely perfect,” but that is a joke with the pieces of the word. The real job of the word is the tense.
