A ploy is a clever move someone uses to get an advantage — and it is not quite honest. There is a plan hiding in it. A shop puts a huge red sign on a thing that was never really expensive; that “sale” is a ploy to pull you in. A person pretends to be hurt so you feel sorry and give in; that is a ploy too. News, business, and use the word a lot. It is not a swear, but it is not a compliment: if you call something a ploy, you are saying the other side is playing a game with you. Though actually, the word can also sit quite light — friends may laugh and call a small trick a ploy, with no real harm in it. The heavy sense is the one with cheating in it. It is mainly a noun. People do not use it for a fair, open plan; that would just be a plan, or a strategy.
組成The story of this word is not settled. It may be a short form of employ or deploy. Or it may come from an older English ploye, borrowed from French ployer (today’s plier, “to fold”), from Latin plicare, “to fold.”
