A plover is a small bird with fairly long legs and a short bill. School books often say it lives near the sea, and many plovers are shorebirds: they run along wet sand and mud in quick bursts, then stop. Though actually not every plover lives by the sea — some breed on inland grass and open wild land. The name covers a whole group of similar birds. You will meet it in nature writing and bird names more than in city conversation. It has nothing to do with plough, even though the words look a little alike on the page.

組成Inherited from Middle English plover, from Anglo-Norman plover / plovier, from Medieval Latin plovarius / pluviārius. Where that Latin came from is disputed; it may be from Latin pluvia, “rain” — perhaps because people linked the birds with the rainy season — but that is only a perhaps.
