A plosive is a consonant sound you make by stopping the air in your mouth completely, then letting it burst out. Say p or b: the lips close, the air piles up, then they pop open. T and d do the same with the tongue just behind the teeth; k and g do it at the back of the mouth. Teachers also call these stops, because the air really does stop. B, d, g use the voice; p, t, k do not. English also has a catch in the throat (the sound in some people’s “water”) that is a kind of plosive too — though actually many school lists only give six: p, b, t, d, k, g. This is a word; ordinary people just say “the p sound”.
