A plimsoll is a light cotton shoe with a flat rubber sole — the simple kind British children wear for PE. The top is cloth; the bottom is rubber; there is no thick soft pad. It is a British word. Americans usually say sneaker or gym shoe. Though actually, the name is a little historical joke. Samuel Plimsoll was a man who fought for a painted line on ships to show how low they could sit in the water. The thin line where the rubber sole meets the cloth looked a bit like that ship line, so the shoe was possibly named after him. The ship mark is the Plimsoll line; this entry is the shoe.
