The stretch of Earth history that began about two million years ago and ended about 10,000 years ago, when great ice sheets grew and melted again and again over much of the north. People loosely call it 'the Ice Age', though actually there were several ice ages inside this one period, with warmer gaps between them. Modern humans appear in this time; many huge animals, such as mammoths, die out near the end of it. You can use Pleistocene as a name (the Pleistocene) or as an adjective (Pleistocene ice, Pleistocene ). placed it as the 'newest' of the old -cene chapters, before the still-newer Holocene — our own recent time.
組成From Ancient Greek pleîstos ('most') + kainós ('new'), coined by Charles Lyell in 1839 to mean 'newest'. The ending -cene is the same geological suffix you see on other Earth-age names.
