1. 1

In Britain, plc after a company name means public limited company: a large company whose shares the public can buy and sell, usually on the stock market. You see it in writing more than in careful speech: Tesco plc, Rolls-Royce plc. It is a legal label, a bit dry, and very British — the US does not use plc; you get Inc. or Corp. instead. Limited (Ltd) is the smaller cousin: a private company whose shares are not freely sold to anyone. People sometimes read plc aloud as the three letters, sometimes as ‘public limited company’. It is not a personal computer (PC), and not a plug.
