A playpen is a small space for a baby or a very small child to play in, so they can move about without wandering off or falling down the . It is like an open box: the floor is the floor, and the sides are bars, mesh, or a net, high enough that a toddler cannot climb out easily. Parents put toys in, then put the child in. It is a home-and-nursery word, not a fancy one — you see it on product boxes and in parenting talk. It is not a playground (that is outside, for bigger children) and not a cot (a cot is for sleeping). Some families now use a bigger, fold-up ‘play yard’ instead, but playpen is still the ordinary word for that barred or netted box.
組成play + pen. Here pen is an enclosure (as for animals), not a writing pen.
