A play-by-play is a running report of a sports game, given at the same time the game is being played, one play after the next. The announcer tells you who has the ball, who passed, who scored, right as it happens. This is an American sports-broadcast word. Next to it you often hear “color commentary,” which is the extra chat, jokes, and background; play-by-play is the straight “what is happening now.” People also borrow it for any blow-by-blow account of something that is not sport: “Give me the play-by-play of the meeting.” In Taiwan the idea is familiar as live 賽況解說, but the English phrase itself you will mostly meet in US sports in English.
play-by-play 指比賽進行的同時，一個動作接一個動作地即時報導，例如誰拿到球、誰傳球、誰得分，主要是美式體育轉播的用語。它的搭配詞是「color commentary」，也就是穿插在中間的閒聊、笑話與背景，play-by-play 則只說現在發生了什麼事。這個詞也可以借用到體育以外，像是「Give me the play-by-play of the meeting.」，意思是請你把會議的經過一步一步說給我聽。台灣熟悉的是即時賽況解說這個概念，英文這個詞則多半會在美式體育英語中看到。
