Play-acting is that same pretence seen as a thing: behaviour in which someone pretends to be serious or sincere, but is not. If someone is “just play-acting,” they are putting on a performance of feeling. Parents say it to children; adults say it when they think a colleague is making a scene. It can sound , so it is a sharp word to throw at someone who may actually be hurt. In a theatre, acting in a play is honest work, and everyone agrees it is a story. This play-acting is the everyday accusation that the feelings in life are fake.
