A platoon is a small group of soldiers. It sits inside a larger group called a company, and a lieutenant is usually in charge of it. In many armies a platoon is a few dozen people, then split again into even smaller groups (often called squads). You meet the word in war films, army news, and history. Though actually, people stretch it. In American sports, a team may “platoon” two players, meaning they take turns in the same position. A boss may talk about a “platoon” of staff as if they were a little unit. That looser use is real, but the home meaning is still the army one: a named block of soldiers, not a random crowd.

組成From an old French word plauton, a form of peloton, built from Middle French pelote + -on. English peloton is the same word in another shape (a doublet). The French picture was a little ball, then a tight little group.
