A plasterer is a person whose job is to cover walls and ceilings with plaster — that wet, thick mix that dries hard and smooth. In a new building, or when people repair an old one, the plasterer comes after the bricks or boards are up, and before the painters. They spread the mix, make it flat, and wait for it to set. In some places the same worker also does other wall jobs; in others, plastering is its own skilled work. You hear the word on building sites and in talk about house repairs more than in everyday chat, though most people understand it. People sometimes stretch it to anyone who finishes inside walls, even when the coat is a modern skim and not old-style plaster.
