Plankton are the very small living things that float in water, especially the sea. Some are tiny plants that make food from sunlight; some are tiny animals. They drift with the water. They do not swim hard from place to place the way a fish does. Fish, whales, and many other sea animals eat them, so the whole food chain in the ocean starts here. One creature is often too small to see with only your eyes, but in huge numbers they can change the colour of the water. Though actually, the word is also used for lakes, not only the sea, and some larger drifting animals get pulled into the idea too. It is a science word, but use it freely.
組成Borrowed from German Plankton, coined by the German zoologist and marine biologist Victor Hensen. By surface analysis, Ancient Greek πλαγκτός (planktós, “drifter”) + -on. Ultimately from Ancient Greek πλαγκτόν (planktón, “drifting”), from πλάζομαι (plázomai, “to wander, drift”), from πλάζω (plázō, “to cause to wander, drive astray”). Surface split: plankt- + -on.
