Plainsong is old Christian church music: people sing a simple tune, often all on the same melody, without instruments. It is the English name for what music writers also call . The singing can sound calm and spare, even a little bare, because there is usually no harmony and no band — just voices, and often Latin words. Gregorian chant is the plainsong many people have heard, though actually plainsong is the wider family, and Gregorian is the famous Latin branch. You meet the word in church, history, and music class, not in casual chat.
