A pixie is a tiny imaginary person in English folk stories, especially stories from the southwest of England. Pixies look like very small humans, have a little magic, and like playing tricks — hiding things, leading off the path. People often lump them together with fairies, though actually in the old local stories they are their own kind of creature, more mischievous than pretty. In modern English you also hear pixie for a short, close haircut (a pixie cut), because it looks a bit elf-like; that is the same word, stretched. The origin is uncertain. The word turns up in the 1600s in that part of England. Some people connect it to a Swedish dialect word pysk for a fairy, but nobody has a good story for how a Swedish dialect word would land in Devon. Others guess it comes from Puck, the , plus a pet-name ending. Those are maybes, not facts.
