Pitter-patter is the sound or feel of quick, light beats or steps: rain on a roof, small feet on a floor, sometimes a heart that is beating fast and light. “The rain went pitter-patter” means those short, soft taps. You can use it as a noun (the pitter-patter of little feet), as a verb (rain pitter-pattering on the window), or as this kind of “how it goes” word. It is playful, almost like a children’s-book sound. Adults use it when they want a gentle, cute picture, not a hard or loud one.
