The pithead is the top of a coal mine: the entrance at the surface and the buildings around it. This is where miners go down, and where coal comes up. Pit here means the mine, especially in British English. You will hear it in mining history, news, and older British writing; it is not everyday English in Taiwan. Though actually, the pithead is the surface, not the tunnels underground. Families waiting for news after an accident wait at the pithead because that is the mouth of the mine, not because anyone’s head is involved.
